Values in Action: How We’re Giving Back in 2017

When FreeWheel was established 10 years ago, the foundational DNA was comprised of a great product, a great team, and great market dynamics. But to take success to the highest level, our founders built a culture of purposeful, proudly unique, and deeply caring individuals—values that are mirrored today across Comcast’s Advanced Advertising Group.

As someone deeply committed to volunteering in my personal life, coming to an organization that values and supports giving initiatives was a key part in my decision to join this great company. Here’s a look back at the many initiatives that our talented and ambitious teams have accomplished so far this year.

Helping Future Generations

Supporting organizations dedicated to improving the lives of children has been a reoccurring theme this year, starting in January when four-hundred employees hand-packaged 100,000 meals for Feeding Children Everywhere during our 2017 Kickoff.

In April, we hosted our 2nd annual drive to support Rosie’s Theatre Kids, an organization offering life skills and academic tutoring to teens in need through the performing arts—a program near and dear to Mike Lawlor, SVP, Client Services, and his long-standing commitment to the program. We were proud to once again be on hand for the annual showcase of their artistic work, “Passing it On.”

Our colleagues at Strata are devoting their time to inspiring young women by teaching them how to code. Strata recently hosted a “Podcasting 101” workshop at their headquarters in Chicago. Joy Baer, President, attended the workshop as she is personally invested in addressing the gender gap issue in coding and engineering and strives to provide, “girls with a gateway to exploring new technologies.” Read more about this exciting initiative.

Meanwhile, our support of Minds Matter goes beyond giving funds, with the investment of something perhaps even more precious: time. Every Saturday morning during the school year, a group of employees provide college counseling to underprivileged high-schoolers. We were proud to end the school year having raised $10,000, which will help the organization continue to support these talented students.

Supporting Healthy Lives   

For the third year in a row, we supported BreastCancer.org’s annual Bowling for Breast Cancer event. Our deeply caring values married to our competitive spirit enabled us to raise more than any other participating organization—nearly $20,000, which will help engage, educate, and empower women with expert information and support.

And we aren’t afraid of healthy competition for a good cause. In July, our teams took to the pavement for the third year in a row to participate in the Media Trust Triathlon, an organization that inspires the media industry to come together and raise funds for community groups in the U.K.

Our peers at Strata also raised their heart rates to raise money this year. Team captain Julie Shelton, Project Coordinator, led 21 determined cyclists in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis this past June– earning more than $32,000 for the cause while biking 125 miles in Chicago, Illinois.

Enriching our Communities

In honor of International Women’s Month in March, Strata employees also collected over 20 bags of clothing and shoes to Dress for Success, an international not-for-profit organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing professional attire and the development tools.

For the celebration of Pride Month in June — it didn’t take long to deck our entire NYC office in rainbow flags to affirm our advocacy and commitment to diversity and inclusion. This year we hosted a series of activities to raise funding and awareness, including a rainbow-themed breakfast, happy hour, and raffle to support the LGBT Center of New York, ultimately raising nearly $6,000.

Comcast Cares Day

This spring, Comcasters around the world improved local communities on Comcast Cares Day—a 16-year tradition and the largest single-day corporate volunteer event in the U.S. which occurs annually on Earth Day.  While my colleagues here in NYC gathered to clean up Brooklyn Bridge Park, U.K. teams helped rebuild Sweettree Farm, which seeks to make a positive difference to the lives of vulnerable people by providing meaningful experiences in a natural environment.

All in, we have volunteered countless hours and raised more than $50,000 in support of a variety of worthy organizations in the first half of this year—and we are far from done. I’m already looking forward to our month-long campaign to support the Movember Foundation again this November. We’ll aim to surpass the record amount we raised in 2016 in support men’s health issues such as testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and mental health.

As we look forward to the remainder of 2017, we are proud to be a part of Comcast, a company that is unwavering in their commitment to connecting to their communities and strives to make a positive impact everywhere they exist.
